La Mesa, Tree San Diego partner for education event and tree giveaway

The City of La Mesa is teaming up with the nonprofit organization Tree San Diego to host a free community educational event and tree giveaway for local residents next month.

The tree event will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 26 at Highwood Park, 4200 Parks Ave., in La Mesa.

The morning event will teach attendees about the environmental, economic and social benefits of maintaining a thriving local tree canopy.

As part of the collaborative initiative, eligible La Mesa residents can register to receive a free 5-gallon tree to plant at home.

The trees will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis for pickup at the La Mesa Public Works facility at 8152 Commercial St. in La Mesa. To claim one of the free trees, residents must live in La Mesa and register in advance through the Tree San Diego events calendar.

Tree San Diego is a regional nonprofit dedicated to enhancing the quality, density, and sustainability of urban forests across San Diego County’s incorporated cities and unincorporated areas.

The organization frequently collaborates with local governments, community leaders, and the Urban Corps of San Diego on large-scale tree planting initiatives.

These municipal planting partnerships not only provide simple tree installments but also help cities meet their climate action planning goals by developing reports for greenhouse gas reduction, Tree San Diego officials say.
