Santee attains “Fire Risk Reduction Community” status

(Santee) — The City of Santee has been designated a Fire Risk Reduction Community, recognizing local efforts to reduce wildfire risk and improve community resilience.

Why does this matter? California regulations require insurance companies to consider a community’s Fire Risk Reduction designation when determining wildfire-related insurance rates.

Because the designation is still relatively new, the impact on individual policies will vary by insurance provider and policy. The City is sharing this information so residents are aware of Santee’s designation and have access to documentation if needed.

The Fire Risk Reduction Community List, as mandated by PRC 4290.1, is “a list of local agencies located in a state responsibility area or a very high fire hazard severity zone…that meet best practices for local fire planning.” The List is developed and maintained by the Board, with the first iteration beginning July 1, 2022 and updated every two years thereafter.
